MARÉ DE AGOSTO
Agosto de 2019. Era difícil imaginar, mas estávamos prestes a vivenciar um dos maiores crimes ambientais, em extensão, de que se tem notícia no país.
As pequenas manchas escuras avistadas nas praias da Paraíba logo se transformariam em milhares de toneladas de petróleo cru se alastrando pelo litoral brasileiro, com impacto mais significativo na região Nordeste.
Avançando dia após dia, silencioso, camuflado, navegando à “meia água”, o óleo deixava seu rastro de destruição por onde passava.
Logo a substância foi identificada como sendo o MEREY-16, uma mistura de petróleo cru extraído na Venezuela. Apesar da descoberta do “nome e sobrenome”, passado mais de um ano do início da tragédia, de certo tem-se apenas incertezas.
Até hoje nenhum responsável foi identificado ou mesmo punido, não se sabe como o óleo chegou, o volume derramado ou sequer a real extensão dos danos causados.
A cada registro de novas praias, manguezais e estuários atingidos, as consequências trágicas dos reiterados maus-tratos ao meio ambiente ressaltavam a falta de importância dispensada, oficialmente, às questões ambientais e às desigualdades regionais no Brasil de hoje.
Neste livro, trago não apenas registros fotográficos, mas também diversas reflexões visuais sobre a tragédia e o que vivenciei neste período. Registro para que não se esqueça, mostro para que se importe.

AUGUST TIDE
August 2019. It was hard to imagine but we were about to experience one of the biggest environmental crimes, considering the extension, ever reported in the country.
The small dark slicks seen on the beaches of Paraíba would soon turn into thousands of tons of petroleum spreading along the Brazilian coast, which significantly affected the Northeast region.
Spreading even more day after day, silent, disguised and sailing at midwater, the oil left a trail of destruction.
The substance was identified as MEREY-16, a mix of crude oil extracted in Venezuela. Although the “first and last name” were discovered, more than a year after such a tragedy began, all we know is that nothing is known for sure.
Absolutely nobody has been identified or even punished so far; there is no explanation as to how the oil reached the Brazilian coast; there is no information about the total volume of the spill or the real extension of the damages for that matter.
With each new beach, mangrove forests and estuaries affected by the oil, the tragic consequences of the reiterated mistreatment imposed to the environment highlighted the lack of importance that is officially given to environmental issues and regional inequalities in Brazil today.
In this book, I present not only photographic records but also several visual thoughts on the tragedy, and what I have witnessed during that time. I record it so you do not forget, I show it so you care.
